Every 4th marine engineer, before starting work on a sea vessel, is required to undergo appropriate training and pass exams. 

 

    But practical training and full mastery of the duties of a junior engineer occurs directly upon his admission to a sea vessel, because each ship has its own individual characteristics and features. 

 

    Also, this vacancy at sea implies regular advanced training and acquisition of additional skills that will help this specialist become a higher-ranking marine engineer, as well as master the specialties of a marine engineer and marine electrician. 

 

    Regardless of the type of vessel used by a particular shipping company, every 4th engineer reports to the same 2nd rank specialist. 

    Although the 2nd marine engineer also has many responsibilities, he is always interested in providing practical assistance to the junior specialist and helping him fully master the duties of a junior engineer.

 

- When joining the vessel, the 4th engineer is obliged to inform the chief engineer about it, and in case of his absence, to notify the 2nd ship's engineer about it;

 

- The new specialist must inspect the engine room together with the previous engineer and assume the burden of professional duties;

 

- The specialist must check the location of all parts, spare parts and components for cleaning and compressor equipment;

 

- The employee must check the inventory and location of components and spare parts for pumping equipment;

 

- The check also includes studying the maintenance schedule of the equipment entrusted to him;

 

- The employee checks the condition and location of the bunkering system, as well as the efficiency of the tanks, measuring pipes and valves;

 

- The fuel tank system and sludge collectors are also subject to inspection and maintenance;

 

- The daily consumption of lubricants and fuel is checked and a note is made in a special measurement log.

 

- After the new and outgoing engineers have completed their inspection and check of the engine room, the 4th engineer reports the results to the 2nd engineer and also informs him of any problems or issues that have been identified.

 

    Although today the vacancies at sea offered to professional seafarers are quite diverse, the specialty of the 4th engineer is in high demand among the navy employees. 

 

    The duties of each specialist in this field are individual and varied, depending on the vessel on which he serves. The level of the specialist's salary directly depends on this, which is calculated in accordance with the norms of the current legislation and the policy of a particular shipping company that has provided the employee with such a job.
