The port of Taganrog is located on the north coast of the Sea of Azov and is one of the largest in Russia. The port freezes in winter for several months even in relatively mild weather. To provide comfortable access in winter, a special icebreaker is used in the port. Vessels with a minimum water supply of 20 cm are allowed to swim along the canal and its water area.
The port of Taganrog is under the reliable protection of the dam and mols. The water area includes three combined basins: Novy, Petrovsky and Remontny. They contain berths of a commercial seaport, a ship repair plant and commercial facilities. The port also oversees transportation through the Kerch Yenikalsky Canal and the Kerch Ferry.
Port development
Allowing sea transportation along the Azov and Black Sea, the seaport of Taganrog was initially considered as one of the centers of industry and trade in the Azov region. The main round in the development and improvement of the port is 1991, when it acquired independence and received the status of a port for international shipping. This led to a rapid increase in cargo flow and a proportional increase in ship traffic. As cargo turnover increased, the sea shipping channel faced difficulties due to the lack of the ability to increase cargo processing on existing berths. Also, the situation was complicated by the lack of space for the construction of new berths due to the fact that the port is located in the historical district of Taganrog and is tightly surrounded by various construction objects.
The outlet was found closer to 1998, when it was decided to monetize highly specialized berths. Since 1998, over 5 years, two stages of the elevator processing grain cargoes have been built and put into operation in the port. A few years later, terminals processing petroleum products were also erected and commissioned.
Commercial activities of large stevedoring companies, which oversee the activities of more than a dozen berths, flourish in the port. The total annual volume of cargo transportation reached 3.4 million tons.
By 2018, freight turnover statistics stabilized and amounted to more than 3 million tons, including grain and processed products, coal, oil products, general cargo.
Safety monitoring
The Customs post of the port of Taganrog, as well as the Administration of the seaport of Temryuk, are responsible for the safety of the seaport. On the spot, security is monitored by the captain's port service, which is entrusted with administrative and power powers. This service closely monitors compliance with the rules for the safety of navigation, the environmental situation. It is also obliged to promote the modernization of the port's capacity.
Special attention is currently paid to monitoring environmental safety. The Port Master Service checks the situation for compliance with current international conventions, treaties, as well as technical documentation on the protection of navigation and environmental protection.
Emergency response services also operate in the seaport. Emergency services, rescue preparedness points and response services in case of emergency situations are provided here. An equally significant aspect of the port's activities is to ensure that all vessels are closely monitored. This duty is assigned to the Customs Post, which performs the inspection of foreign and Russian ships.
