One of the largest archipelagos in Russia is Solovetsky, it is more than 100 islands with a total area of almost 30,000 hectares. The archipelago itself is located in the north of the Onega Bay of the White Sea, at 65 parallels and 165 kilometers from the line defining the Arctic Circle. Of the more than 100 islands, the 6 largest are especially distinguished, among which Anzer and Bolshoi Solovetsky are the largest. At the same time, the main marine hub is the Big Solovetsky Island, here there are several mooring complexes at once, which are part of the seaport of the Solovetsky archipelago.
The sea commercial port of Onega has a long history, it was opened back in 1781, as well as the customs terminal, and this was done by decree of Catherine II. The location of the port was not chosen at all by chance, the location made it possible to make it a transshipment point not only for domestic, but also for world trade. That is why immediately after the opening, the customs post of the Solovki terminal was launched here. Even before the official opening of the port and the customs terminal, a large number of foreign ships passed through this hub, for example, from 1762-1774, almost 300 ships of various types belonging to foreign jurisdiction entered this port. The archipelago is located in the upper part of the Onega Bay in the center. The unique location of the Solovetsky archipelago also increased the defense capability of the northern regions of the Russian Empire. Goods unloaded on the nightingales could later be transported to the ports of Onega, Kemi and Belomorsk and sent inland. That is, there was no need to allow foreign ships to enter ports located along the Onega Bay located on the continent. Today, the administration of the seaport Onega and the seaport itself are located in Onega, while this port includes three terminals, these are Kem, Solovki and Belomorsk. Terminals operate in the same system and exchange information, redirect ships. At the same time, the largest hubs are precisely the commercial sea port of Onega and the Solovki sea terminal. As for the port of Onega, it received a serious expansion in Soviet times, during this period not only additional berths were built, but also a sea passage channel, as well as various port facilities and a radio station. Cargo traffic was significantly increased, for example, for the entire 1980, more than 300 ships of various displacement and tonnage passed through the port of Onega.
Today, the port of Onega is a large complex of fairways and canals, which have a total length of 12 kilometers. The main channel is Karelian up to 5.2 meters deep. The port itself consists of 7 berths, where 1 berth of the commercial port. It is used to service coaster-type vessels with a draft of up to 2.7 meters. Also in the port there are 4 berths focused on the products of logging and forestry. Most of these products are manufactured by the Onega plant. At this pier, ships up to 125 meters long, up to 18 meters wide and up to 5 meters in draft are accepted.
Also, the complex includes 2 floating berths, they are located within the boundaries of the city loading terminal, and receives ships up to 15 meters wide and up to 115 meters long. The seaport operates from May until freezing (usually the second half of November), from December to April it is not available for ships. Onega port is included in the list of the largest ports in Russia.
As for the port and the customs post of the Solovki terminal, today it includes several mooring complexes at once, including the Tsarskaya Marina with a length of 20 meters. Also, larger complexes for ships of large tonnage "Monastyrsky" with a length of 115 meters and "Tsarskaya Marina" with a length of 120 meters. In addition, there is a fairly large Heta site used to unload various cargoes. Since 2015, large-scale infrastructure development has begun within the port. Here they not only took up the development of the port itself, but also began to restore objects of cultural and historical heritage. As for the development of the port's infrastructure, at the beginning of 2015, the government of the Arkhangelsk region decided to build a new warehouse for storing goods. In a few months, the territory was prepared, a new pier was equipped and a crane was installed. After 5 months, the new pier began to receive cargo. In addition, modern transshipment equipment was installed on Bolshie Solovki Island itself, and the pier line was strengthened. The new terminal is capable of receiving various types of cargo, these are not only building materials and products of the woodworking industry, but also containers. The new terminal has an area of about 36,000 square meters and can receive ships up to 100 meters long and with a draft of up to 4.1 meters. Today, the berths of the complex can accept not only cargo, but also passengers. As for cargo, these are also materials that ensure life on the island, such as:
Live cargo.
Heavy loads and cargo of non-standard dimensions.
Dangerous goods, e.g. different types of fuel.
