A ship that remains aground on the west coast of South Africa began to break apart during a storm. Large waves broke the ship into several pieces. After the hull was damaged, an oil spill occurred.
Rescuers managed to pump out some oil and fuel from the ship. The rescue operation is ongoing and rescuers have ordered more equipment to contain the oil spill. According to South African authorities, there is no evidence of damage to wildlife so far.
On July 8, 2024,
a Sudanese captain issued a distress call because the ship was dangerously heeled while south of Cape Town and west of Doring Bay. Most likely the ship began to take on water. But there are no details of the incident yet.
The crew of 18 sailors first moved into life rafts, then were evacuated to nearby ships. No casualties were reported.
