On June 1, 2015, during a storm, the liner capsized and sank on the Yangtze River near Wuhan, Damazhou. The ship was traveling from Nanjing to Chongqing. The captain and chief engineer reported that the ship was caught in a tornado, and the China Meteological Administration confirmed that the tornado occurred in Jianli County with wind speeds reaching EF1 strength, or approximately 86–110 mph. There were 48 crew members and 410 passengers on board. Only 16 people were able to survive.
