On September 26, 2002, the ferry suffered from engine failure, causing it to capsize and sank in stormy weather between the southern Senegalese capital of Dakar. There were approximately 1,863 passengers on board, which is 3 times the maximum number of passengers. Only 64 people survived this catastrophe. The disaster is the second deadliest non-military maritime disaster in terms of death toll.
