On September 28, 1994, the ship sank in the Baltic Sea while on a voyage from Tallinn to Stockholm. During stormy weather conditions, the bow ramp separated from the vessel, causing water to enter. At the time of the incident, there were 989 passengers on board, of which only 138 people survived. The sinking is recognized as one of the worst maritime disasters of the 20th century.
