The Northern Design Bureau was founded in April 1946 to design new-type destroyers.
- In 1960, 98 destroyers were built using the Northern Design Bureau's designs. Many technical solutions became the basis for the creation of new-generation surface ships.
- Since 1956, the Northern Design Bureau has been intensively developing new-generation ships designed specifically to use missile weapons. The first ship in the world equipped with both anti-ship and anti-aircraft weapons was built.
- For the first time in the world, an all-mode gas turbine power plant was used on large ships.
- In the late 1970s, the Northern Design Bureau developed another project for a large anti-submarine ship, a missile cruiser, and a heavy nuclear missile cruiser. During the construction of the ships, modernization was carried out aimed at improving their combat and technical means. Third-generation ships were created, such as the nuclear cruiser Pyotr Velikiy and the large anti-submarine ship Admiral Chabanenko.
The export of products by Severnoye PKB can be divided into several main areas:
1. Design and construction at Russian shipyards;
2. Providing technical assistance in designing with subsequent construction at the customer's shipyards.
- In 1975, a contract was signed for the construction of frigates for the Republic of India at shipyards.
The ships of the basic projects that were built for Russia have capabilities and are distinguished by high seaworthiness. Experts believe that these ships are capable of solving problems in the sea and ocean zone with high efficiency.
According to the projects developed by Severnoye PKB, the following were built: a 6,900-ton bulk carrier, a 12,000-ton deadweight universal vessel, and a 5,800-ton deadweight chemical tanker. These vessels were acquired by foreign ship owners (Austria, Estonia, Germany).
This experience in designing and delivering vessels, SPKB made a decision in the implementation of the program for the revival of the Russian fleet.
Over more than 50 years of history, the Northern Design Bureau has accumulated vast experience in designing surface ships of any class and any displacement.
The team was able to preserve the core and existing high qualifications. The work allows us to cooperate with any potential customers, take into account their requirements for weapons and accessories. Foreign companies with which SPKB cooperates make it possible to promptly take into account and solve any tasks and wishes of the partner, carry out supervision of installation and maintenance of equipment.
