Just getting acquainted with the Saint Petersburg State Marine Technical University, you immediately understand that this is a leading Russian university, the faculties of which train highly qualified marine engineers. The institution is unique, since the level of training of young specialists in it fully complies with international standards. They generate their knowledge, acquire practical skills and abilities, study and comprehensively improve themselves. Thanks to the scientific and methodological guidance of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the university has the status of "academic", participates in numerous international programs, trains management personnel.

The main task of the educational institution is to educate qualified managers of a new type. They must be able to organize effective business processes, reform and redistribute the functions of power in the economy, develop innovations, ensure information openness and cybersecurity. Graduates of the university design, build, operate sea and river vessels for various purposes. These are cargo and passenger water transport, military ships and submarines, as well as special floating craft for studying the underwater world, conducting exploration of the seabed, searching for and extracting minerals.

History of the educational institution

The main building of SPbGMTU is located on Lotsmanskaya Street, in the old part of St. Petersburg, next to the galley island and the Admiralty shipyards. The faculty appeared in 1902 as part of the Polytechnic Institute in Sosnovka, but in 1930 it was significantly expanded and transformed into a separate administrative unit. In 1962, new university buildings were laid in Ulyanka. At the same time, the correspondence faculty of the university was opened, a new laboratory building on Lotsmanskaya and a campus on Leninsky Prospekt began to be built.

Until 1990, the educational institution was called the Leningrad Shipbuilding Institute (Korabelka). In 1967, it was awarded the Order of Lenin, and in 1990, the list of specialties was expanded and it was given the status of technical. Then, up until 1992, the date when the city returned its historical name, the university was called the Leningrad State Marine Technical University. Over the 90-plus years of its existence, it trained more than 50,000 shipbuilding specialists, many of whom went to work in ministries and design bureaus, became famous in government echelons, became talented engineers, and outstanding scientific and cultural figures.

Features and areas of activity of the university

The Marine Technical University of St. Petersburg is one of the largest universities in the North-West of Russia. More than 12,000 Russian and foreign students study within its walls every year. For several years now, it has introduced continuous education, allowing you to complete college, bachelor's, master's, postgraduate studies and further develop the acquired skills. Therefore, students are widely involved in the research work of professors and postgraduates, create their own projects, participate in competitions, receive grants and scholarships. The institution also publishes its own magazines.

At the same time, the university closely cooperates with many enterprises and organizations of various levels and focuses. There, students can do an internship, and then get subsequent employment. Thanks to such interaction, numerous general educational programs are implemented at SPbGMTU, affecting secondary vocational, higher and additional (business) education. The latter includes economics, management, municipal administration, law, advertising and marketing, personnel management, IT technologies, document management and much more. And thanks to international "two degrees" programs, students can take advantage of the opportunity for semester internships at leading educational institutions in other countries.

Sea trips

An important feature of the university is the simulator and natural practice at sea. Applicants are trained both on complex technical complexes and directly on operating floating craft or in the seaport of St. Petersburg. Scientific progress has already made it possible to launch ships with a minimum crew, and to service ports and shipyards with the help of robots. Therefore, now the navy is in demand not ordinary sailors, but multidisciplinary specialists with higher education. And employers invite them to prestigious positions with good salaries.

The sailing vessel "Mir" assigned to the university, as well as ships of Russian companies that have collaborated with the educational institution, allow students to receive practical training in maritime professions at the proper level. Cadets of navigation specialties who have completed the first year of study undergo practical training on them. In subsequent periods, practical training can take place on ships of companies that have concluded contractual relations with the university. In particular, this is the training ship of the Russian Navy "Smolny", equipped with several classrooms with special navigation simulators and designed for 300 cadets.

Current capabilities and technical equipment of the university

Today, SPbGMTU leads the list of maritime universities in the country in terms of training of shipbuilding engineers. The high qualifications of specialists graduated by the educational institution are confirmed by the International Institute of Marine Engineers in London. The institution uses various teaching methods, provides professional educational and industrial practice, and conducts introductory excursions. The approved programs cover all the competencies, knowledge and skills necessary for a young specialist performing the duties required by international standards in a primary position.

The modern material and technical equipment of the university also helps in the learning process. The university has several buildings, departments and laboratory premises are equipped with complex training complexes, various training stands and the necessary technical means. Work at sea is organized both for specially selected target groups and individually. Practical training takes place both in remote corners of the World Ocean and on large rivers of the country. Based on the results of their studies, the faculty administrations employ graduates in large successful companies, partner enterprises, and government agencies.
