The seaport, located on the banks of the Mezen River, 45 kilometers from its confluence with the Mezen Bay of the White Sea, is the largest transport enterprise in the village of Kamenka.
The water area of the port in the north is limited by the line connecting Cape Ryabinov with Cape Nerpinsky. In the south, the port border runs along a parallel of 65 degrees 50 minutes north latitude. The area of the water area is 191 square kilometers.
The port has 3 berths: one in the city of Mezen and two in the village of Kamenka, Mezen district. The port also includes an anchorage at the mouth of the Kuloy River. The maximum draft of ships that can enter the port usually ranges from 3.9 meters to 4.2 meters with full water.
Entry to and exit from the port is carried out only in the daytime, due to difficult shipping conditions. Firstly, there are strong tidal currents in the port, and secondly, throughout the water area, during all navigation there is a change in the ship's course.
At the tide, the level of the river decreases so much that a boat cannot pass along the ship's course, with a draft of 1 meter, and at the tide you can start a ship with a draft of up to 4.5 meters. Tidal currents on the Mezen River are characterized by such a feature that the tide goes 3 hours, and the tide lasts 9 hours. At the mouth of the river, the rise of the level reaches 9.5 meters
The basis of transportation in the port is the northern supply = supplies for the needs of the Mezensky and Leshukonsky districts of the Arkhangelsk region of coal and diesel fuel. River vessels carry out commercial cabotage transport.
The port of Mezen has no connection with the country's railway network. Summer navigation in the port lasts from July to October. The port can receive ships up to 120 meters long, up to 15 meters wide and up to 4 meters draft. Since there are no specialized berths for loading and unloading sea vessels in the Mezen port, cargo operations are carried out on an internal raid using 4 floating cranes with a carrying capacity of 5 tons, and non-self-propelled barges. Transshipment of goods from barges and back is carried out at the navigation pier, in the port point of Krivka, a suburb of Mezen, and at another pier in the village of Kamenka.
