The southern department of the Institute of Oceanology named after P.P. Shirshov is located on the shores of the Blue Bay of the Black Sea, 15 kilometers from Gelendzhik.

This office is engaged in monitoring the Russian sector of the Black Sea, developing tools and methods of operational oceanography.

The main directions of the southern branch of the institute are the study of the processes of the coastal zone of the sea, as well as monitoring the state of the coastal zone of the sea and coastal protection structures of the Black and Azov Seas.
