The history of the Northwestern Branch of the Institute of Oceanology dates back to 1994.

This branch is engaged in the mixing of river and sea waters in the estuary regions of the northern rivers.

In addition, the northwestern branch is studying the waters of the Western sector of the Arctic, developing methods for multicriterial assessment of water areas and coastal areas, and is also assessing the contribution of long-range atmospheric transport of pollutants to pollution of the Arctic territories.

From 3 to 7 expeditions are carried out annually. During the expeditions, water, ice and soil are sampled.
