The P.P. Shirshova Institute of Oceanology is the only one in Russia that conducts research in all fields of marine sciences, including physics, climatology, chemistry, biology and geology of the ocean, and independently develops marine technology for research.

The branch in St. Petersburg is engaged in modeling surface and internal tides in the Arctic Ocean. The branch proposed alternative approaches to the theory of underwater vision, proposed methods for calculating image contrast, signal-to-noise ratio and detection and recognition ranges of underwater objects.
