The Admiral S. O. Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping — Makarovka with a 200-year history was formed by merging two educational institutions.
The first is the St. Petersburg University of Water Communications. This is one of the very first transport institutes of the Russian Federation.
The second is the S. O. Makarov Maritime Academy. The year of foundation of SUMRF is 2012. The institute has all the necessary licenses and received accreditation for educational activities.
The head of the university is Baryshnikov S. O. The head himself studied at the institute in the 70s in the discipline of ship repair. In the field of the university, he worked in various guises: from an intern to a researcher. He was also promoted to associate professor. For a long period, he supervised the evening department as vice-rector. And in 2009 he took the position of rector of SUMRF, received more than one honorary title in the field of transport education of the Russian Federation. The building was constructed in the spirit of neoclassicism, which is characterized by a certain pomposity and theatricality. The year of construction is dated 1940. Later, a group of architects, including Evdokimov G. N. and Buldakov, undertook to reconstruct the decoration and façade.
The institute has a museum, opened in the 80s. The exposition is of an introductory nature, telling about historical facts, famous personalities who graduated from the institute, professors. The exhibits include personal belongings of graduates, photographs, shipping items, trophies from travels and hikes, and much more.
You can get to the St. Petersburg museum only from the university. Therefore, the entrance is exclusively for applicants, employees of the University and the students themselves. The monument to S. O. Makarov, after whom the university bears, was erected on Kosaya Liniya, opposite the academic building. There is also a museum of the history of the navy and academy, where those who wish can learn about the history of the development of transport education in the Russian Federation. Features of the University
The Institute is considered the flagship of maritime education in the Russian Federation. It is proud of its good material and technical base: high-level computing equipment, special simulators. On the territory there is a military and naval training center for preparing sailors and reserve officers for practice at sea. Cadets and students must learn to survive in difficult conditions. In the pool, they practice the skills of operating life rafts and providing assistance to victims. Firefighting skills are tested at a special training ground. Students go to practice in the 3rd year. Cadets work on real hydraulic structures.
Long-distance sailing practice is carried out on the fastest sailing ship "Mir". Students receive the necessary professional skills. The university has a laboratory for testing water transport and all its parts.
This is the only university in the country with high maritime potential, where engineers are trained to work on nuclear-powered vessels and personnel for the work and maintenance of the Northern Sea Route. They prepare ship crews, managers, logisticians, economists for organizing the maritime sector, and port industry specialists. Almost 100% of students find employment in the first year after graduating from the institute.
To obtain a diploma, cadets must spend at least 12 months at sea on an internship.
Out-of-town students are provided with a dormitory. There are 4 buildings with a total area of over 82 thousand square meters. Cadets from 39 countries study at the institute. Life of students at GUMRF
The institute has organized productive extracurricular activities. Students attend various sports sections, enroll in interest groups, for example, a drum section, and play KVN. Student life is full of competitions, holidays, and festivals. Olympiads are held. The university has its own news channel and media.
Among the famous graduates is Evgeny Kirilovich Zykov, a traveler and explorer. He died in Antarctica. The island of "Zykov" is named in his honor.
At present, such well-known companies as Atomflot, Lukoil, Sovcomflot, and Gazprom cooperate with GUMRF. The institute has met all the conditions for revealing the potential and abilities of cadets so that they graduate as qualified personnel.
