The newly created Ministry of Shipping (Sub-Ministry of Shipping) began its activities on March 1, 2018 with its head office in Limassol. The choice of Limassol as headquarters was not accidental. 95% of Cyprus's shipping companies are based here; the city is rapidly becoming a shipping center on a global scale.

Today, the shipping sector accounts for 7% of the country's gross domestic product. By creating a new ministry, the country is trying to increase the prospects for the development of the shipping industry. The Ministry of Shipping will work with administrative autonomy and will have the first say in the development of a national shipping strategy for the further development of the sector. Moreover, it would have the means to implement the national strategy and legislation and would be responsible for promoting investment in the sector.
